Abstract


The article aims at specifying procedures of analyzing a multilayer semantic structure of a symbol in English media discourse. Symbols are qualified as forming an axiological discursive cultural sign in intercultural communication the interpretation of which calls for linguasemiotic and linguacultural methods of investigation allowing penetration into depths of their semantic space. The interpretation of symbols makes use of lexicographic resources of various types, fragments of discourse practices, quotes views of native speakers. The investigation results in revealing various layers of symbolic sense, brings to light their national and cultural features and shows procedures of disclosing hidden layers of symbolic meanings which offer difficulties in their perception and interpretation in intercultural communication.
