Abstract

The article considers a special method of third-person narration , namely free indirect speech, which occupies an intermediate position between direct speech and indirect speech and, without specific formal features, is clearly defined in the context. This method was widely used in literary works of the authors of the XIX-XX centuries and was ambiguously interpreted by Western, and later Russian linguists. Later this technique began to be used in the press, partially losing its psychologism, but continuing to remain an actively used stylistic figure.
