Basic principles and trends in this area of linguistics are studied through the work of linguists such as André Martinet, David Crystal and others. Particular attention is paid to Zipf's principle of least effort and its influence on the structure of language. The work also examines common phenomena such as the use of abbreviations in words and analyzes methods of linguistic economy, including clipping, backwording and elliptical constructions.
