Abstract
The article examines the concepts of metaphor and personification. The functions of personification in English fiction are defined on the basis of E. Gilbert’s book “Eat, Pray, Love”. The meaning-generating and text-forming functions are revealed in cases of extended personification. In all other selected fragments, the expressive function is defined. In most cases abstract conceptsare endowed with the characteristics of the living, in the other cases concrete material objects become “alive”. Anthropomorphism becomes the key to more complete understanding of the meaning of the work.
