Abstract
This article describes the concept of the dominant developed by the Russian physiologist A. A. Ukhtomsky. The relevance of the concept of dominant in interdisciplinary studies focused on the problem of meaning formation as a result of text comprehension process is emphasized. A brief description of thedominant as a general principle of nerve centers activity is given; scientific works proving the reliability of A. A. Ukhtomsky’s hypotheses are cited. It is assumed that dominance principle, which, according toA. I. Novikov, is an integrative aspect of meaning, can be studied within the framework of psycholinguistic experiments where the “countertext” method is used.
