Abstract
Philosophy puts forward the problem of consequences of general welfare obtained by the future mankind thanks to technological progress and imposed on every individual as a life norm. The idea of general welfare to be granted wholly by means of technology, i.e. beyond developing morals, must take into account not only maximizing good, but also minimizing evil. It is this problem that interests Stanislaw Lem, a well-known science fiction writer, who reflects upon whether the “lawful” instrumental method of making the world happy is not too high. It is quite natural, that evil stopped and cornered tries to find a way out, creating a social catastrophe. Although this catastrophe breaks out under alien stars, the reader realizes that the planet implied is Earth.
