Abstract

The article considers the style of the Bashkir epic “Ural-batur” translated into English, focusing on a system of original similes realized in translation by means of standard structures of the English language. The text provides an aggregate of models and ways of translating similes from Bashkir into English with reference to various episodes, which describe the looks and personalities of the major characters and their antipodes which represent the evil forces. Of special interest is the translation of similes based on culturally specific phenomena reflecting the beauty of Bashkir maidens and horses, as well as the life of the Bashkir people in the epoch of the tribal system.
