Abstract
The article explores the interaction of English abbreviations with other word-formation methods, specifically the creation and use of conversion units based on abbreviations, which we define as “abbreviation-based conversion.” The article examines cases of conversion based on three types of shortenings: compound-clippings, initial abbreviations, and acronyms. It turns out that examples of compound-clippings used as the basis for conversion are few. Conversions based on abbreviations and acronyms
are more common. Examples of conversion based on acronyms are quite colorful, as acronymy often results in bizarre nominations, often homonymous with common words and proper nouns.
Their formation and use, along with the rational principle of economy, are based on the principle of language game and irony. They are often used in ironic contexts. The conducted research adds new strokes and colors to the general picture of the interaction of English abbreviations with other methods of word formation.
