Abstract
The present essay concerns the identification of the semantic potential of the lexeme ‘’scip’’ in Old English. In the paper the term “semantic potential” is seen as a quantitative property of the semantic structure of a lexeme based on its volume of meanings. It is known that the lexeme scip is rather frequent in Old English written records for denoting a ship as a sea-going vessel. Some Old English dictionaries present this lexeme as a monosemantic unit. A vast amount of material contained in the Anglo-Saxon glossaries shows that the lexical unit has its own semantic scope. The problem here to be studied is that syncretism occurs in the semantic structure of the lexeme. On this point we can agree with the fact that the Old English lexeme “scip” is a polysemantic unit.
